Sea Berry (aka Sea Buckthorn)
The fruit is also unique for its oil content, which is used as a treatment for burns and skin diseases as well as for ulcers and other illnesses. Sea Berry has become a valuable commercial crop in Germany where it is harvested by machine and made into delicious juice and other products. Sea Berry's German name is Sanddorn and if you have the opportunity to visit Germany, you will find its juice and other items in many stores. The fruit can be harvested by hand or by cutting off the fruit laden branches and freezing them. The frozen berries can easily be shaken off and, after thawing, make great juice.
Sea Berry can grow in poor, sandy or gravelly soils, likes full to half day sun, is hardy to -40°F (USDA Zone 3) and has no disease or pest problems. It is wind pollinated, and both a female and male plant are required for fruit production. One male is sufficient for up to 8 females. Typically maturing at 8-12 feet in height, Sea Berry blooms in April, ripens in early to mid-September, and can bear 30+ pounds of fruit per female plant.
