Goumi
(Elaeagnus multiflora)
A very popular fruit in the Russian Far East, China and Japan, Goumi just recently became available to American gardeners and is an excellent example of a many-purpose plant. Goumi forms a medium-sized, multi-stemmed shrub growing to 6+ feet in height and width with attractive, silvery green foliage that seems to shimmer in the breeze. In the spring it is thickly festooned in deliciously scented, cream-colored flowers that are adored by bees and other pollinators and beneficial insects. The flowers turn into bright, scarlet-red, juicy and aromatic fruits which can reach 3/4 of an inch in size and taste somewhat like pie cherries. These berries are good eaten out of hand, but they are more often made into jams, sauces, and pies. They are very high in vitamin C, contain compounds that help break down fats in the blood, and are reputed to reduce cholesterol levels.
Goumi thrives on neglect, fruiting well in less than ideal conditions and can tolerate drought once established. Another especially large benefit of Goumi is that it fixes nitrogen. Goumi's gift of nitrogen boosts the growth of neighboring plants such as fruit and/or nut trees, and can increase their production by as much as 10%. The fast-growing greenery of Goumi can also be slashed back heavily to yield mulch. You can't get much more multi-use than that!
