American Persimmon
(Diospyros virginiana)
One of the most delicious of our native American fruits, Persimmons are also very ornamental fruit trees. They are prized for their dark green, tropical-looking foliage, their yellow and scarlet fall color, and their striking, large, delicious, bright orange fruits which adorn the tree until well after the leaves are gone. These fruits are astringent until ripe. They are ready to eat when they are soft like a tomato and are great for fresh eating or for making delectable cookies, cakes, and other treats.
American Persimmons are easy to grow trees. They are not bothered by pests or diseases and are hardy to -25°F (USDA zone 4). They like 1/2 day to full sun and well-drained soil. Their blooms show up in June and the fruit ripens in late September to October, yielding 30+ pounds of fruit per tree. With occasional pruning these trees can easily be maintained at a height of about 10-12 ft.
