Black Walnut
(Juglans nigra)
Prized for its valuable timber as well as its richly flavored kernels, Black Walnut is a stately tree native to North America. They grow quite large, maturing at about 80 feet tall and 50 feet wide. While it can take Black Walnut trees a decade to begin to produce nuts, they can eventually produce 50-150 pounds of nuts per year. Each nut is about 1.5" in diameter and is encased in a green, fleshy husk. The husk turns black and splits open as the nut matures, revealing a hard, dark brown shell. The nuts have a bold, earthy flavor that is relished by many making them a valuable crop.
Walnut wood is highly prized and in fact it is the most expensive native hardwood of North America! It is commonly used for furniture, paneling, scupture, and more. It has high strength, stability and shock-resistance.
Black Walnut trees like 1/2 day to full sun and well-drained soil. They are partially self-fertile, but can produce more nuts if planted near (with about 20-40 foot spacing) a different variety of Black or English Walnut tree. All walnuts produce a substance in the soil, called juglone, which can inhibit the growth of other plants. Among the walnut family, Black Walnut can be especially potent. Don't let this scare you as there are many plants that are not at all bothered by jugone. It is just important to know about so you can do your research on what kinds of plants are juglone tolerant and which plants you should keep well away from your walnut tree(s).
