Lilac
(syringa sp.)
With their large, gorgeous blooms; intense and delightful fragrance; and their historical appeal, many people are very familiar with Lilacs and can recognize them instantly. But, most people do not realize that lilac flowers are also edible! One of the best ways to enjoy them is to use them for an infusion in sugar, honey or syrup. These can then be used in various recipes to add delicious lilac flavor to your baked goods. Or, drizzle your lilac infused honey or syrup in your favorite tea, or on a delectable slice of french toast.
Use lilacs for a casual hedge, as a privacy screen, or as a backdrop. Spectacular in bloom, they are a nice solid green the rest of the growing season. One by itself will form a robust small tree that can be a spring focal point when it is covered in blossoms.
Lilacs require plenty of sunshine, well drained soil, and proper airflow if they are to produce healthy, plentiful blooms year after year. Pruning is best done just after blooming in the spring.

One of a new breed of lilacs, which has a main flush of flowers in spring, but then carries on flowering intermittently right through until mid-autumn. The flowers are a rich pinkish-purple and they open from darker coloured buds, so the overall effect is very colourful. The scent is good too. Bloomerang lilac trees are more compact than other lilacs, growing to a small stature of 4-6 feet tall and wide giving them a pleasant, round shape. Hardy to USDA zone 3.
